OneTouch SureStep Test Strips Recall

3/2/2010
LifeScan has issued a voluntary recall of 8 lots of OneTouch SureStep test strips (lot nos. 2969251, 2969798, 2982369, 2983467, 2969795, 2982566, 2969481, and 2998193) used to measure blood glucose levels. The lot numbers are located on the outer carton and on the test strip vial. The company estimates approximately 14,000 (50 and 100 count) packages of OneTouch SureStep test strips for consumers and health care facilities were distributed nationwide between August 1, 2009 and January 28, 2010. The test strips are being recalled because they may provide falsely low glucose results when the glucose level may actually be higher than 400 mg/dL. Although no injuries have been reported with the recalled test strips, the falsely low test could lead to patients giving themselves too little insulin and consequently result in poor blood glucose control. Patients with test strips from the recalled lots can contact LifeScan at 1-800- 574-6139 between 5 AM and 7 PM PST, 7 days a week, or visit the SureStep Web site to request replacement product, which will be provided free of charge and shipped immediately. Patients can continue using the recalled test strips, but should switch to an alternative testing meter, if possible, until the replacement strips arrive. Patients still using the recalled test strips should contact their health care provider immediately if they obtain results above 400 mg/dL because their blood glucose may even be significantly higher. Hospitals, clinics, and other multipatient facilities using SureStepPro, SureStepFlexx, or OneTouch SureStep Hospital Systems have also been notified.
