New Prevnar Formulation Approved

The FDA has approved Wyeth Pharmaceuticals’ Prevnar 13 (pneumococcal 13-valent conjugate vaccine), the successor to Prevnar, the pneumococcal 7-valent conjugate vaccine. Prevnar 13 is approved for the prevention of invasive pneumococcal disease and otitis media in infants and young children 6 weeks to 5 years of age. The new vaccine extends protection against 6 additional serotypes of the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae.
