British MMR Study Retraction

2/3/2010
The Lancet has fully retracted a flawed measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine study published in 1998 linking the vaccine to autism and bowel disease. A September 2008 study conducted at Columbia University, Massachusetts General Hospital, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention replicated key elements of the original study and found no evidence of a connection between the MMR vaccine and autism or GI disorders. The lead study author was found to have acted unethically in conducting the research. The 1998 MMR vaccine study results played a role in measles resurgence in Britain because parents cited the study as the basis for not vaccinating their children.
